I WHAT DO WE HAVE IN OUR POCKETS ?

EMILY JACIR : Where We Come From

Emily Jacir

" The works by Emily Jacir presented at 2003 , Biennale in Istanbul are most certainly amongst the most convincing within the theme of "Poetic Justice". As stated in various announcements, Dan Cameron’s concern with this concept was a field of creativeACTIVITY, filled with the interplay of apparently quite opposed forces such as the aesthetic qualities of poetry and the strive for justice.

In the Tophane-i Amire cultural centre, originnaly a cannon foundry and barracks building constructed in 1451, Emily Jacir shows herINSTALLATION "Where we come from"; it consists of photos, related texts, and a DVD projection.

Starting point of the piece and of the action it is based on, is the following question, addressed to Palestinians living in exile: "If I could do anything for you, anywhere in Palestine, what would it be?" The artist exploited the liberty of movement (still not void of danger) provided by her passport issued in the United States to fulfill the wishes she received, as far as this was in her hands "

Dhruvi Acharya

Dhruvi Acharya (born 1971, Mumbai) began painting her memories of a real and imagined homeland soon after reaching the USA in 1995. She received her Masters in Painting from the Maryland Institute, College of Art in 1998 and her MFA thesis show was also her first Gallery solo show. Dhruvi has been showing international Galleries and Museums since then.

Dhruvi was awarded the Aditya Birla KalaKiran Puraskar and nominated for the Joan Mitchell Foundation Award in 2006, and was featured on the cover of India Today in 2005. A mother of two boys, Dhruvi was married to filmmaker Manish Acharya (b1967 - 2010). After spending nine years in the USA, Dhruvi now lives Mumbai, India.

she said " My paintings focus on the psychological and emotional aspects of an urban woman’s life in a world teeming with discord, violence and pollution. Just like me, my work is not overtly political, instead of anger or anguish, I tend to utilize subtle, dark and wry humour, to draw viewers into a world where thoughts are as visible as “reality”, and where the protagonists live and metamorphose by the logic of that world.
The paintings are based on my drawings, and my drawing book are like a daily journal, a chronicle of my memories, thoughts, observations, emotions and experiences. I am interested in creating paintings that have a smooth physical surface but are visually and psychologically layered. My desire to understand death, my deep concern for the environment, my love for Indian miniatures, comic books and contemporary street art all come together in my work.
When the work are viewed, I hope the specifics of the stories and the meaning of each image become unimportant, and all that is felt and remembered is the universality of the human experience "

Safwan Dahoul

Safwan Dahoul’s evocative canvases , all of which share the title Dream , examine some of the most intimate moments of the human experience: slumber , companionship , solitude and death. The soulful, dreamy human figures that populate his work are ‘substance matter’ for the artist , a tool through which he depicts and preserves his own biography. Dominated by black, white and muted tones, Dahoul’s canvases explore the relationship between the figure and its background, between the human being and space. His minimalist use of colour references his surroundings and is a response to the absence of colour now seen on the streets of Syria and the rest of the Middle East  ..

he is really one of the talented syrians artist i just read about i love the way he painted
! i feel like there is a deep story behind each panel

Amy Friend : Dare alla Luce

Dare alla Luce

Through small deliberate interventions, they altered these vintage images, allowing light to pass through them. (After all, photographs are made possible with light.) In a literal and somewhat playful manner, they aimed to give the photographs back to the light, hence the title of the series, Dare alla Luce, an Italian phrase used to describe the moment of birth.
